Hi Mr.Ananda,There are human rights abuses in sri lanka but you can't blame the government for that , LTTE is responsible for 90% of the human rights violation,i think that wordings on the ball should have said something like this "LTTE & Sri Lankan Gov do not abuse human rights!",that would be pretty straight forward and less confusing (fair too),because when it says "Play by the rules" some one might wonder if Sri Lankan cricket team is not playing according to the rules,or is it what they wanted?,to kill two birds from one stone?.We have seen many conspiracies against bowlers like Murali & Malinga because they are extrodinary bowlers.
When there is a war its difficult to secure human rights 100%,look at iraq, the goddess of democracy & human rights(America) is violating human rights more than any country in the world,CIA has secret prisons all over the world, they abduct people and transfer them to Gautanama Bay,some of them are totally innocent,So my question is that, why we have not seen a Ball in the Foot Ball world cup saying "America Play By the Rules" ?
I think if you want to defete a terrorist organization like LTTE,Alquada there must be some form of a human rights violation........
Amnesty International has issued a Press Release regarding this matter:

Sri Lanka: Human rights is the issue, not cricket
The distortion in Sri Lanka of Amnesty International’s campaign “Play by the Rules” is a ploy to distract attention from the increasingly desperate plight of hundreds of thousands of Sri Lankan people.
“We are concerned at abuses by all parties to the conflict — civilians are killed, abducted and forcibly disappeared every day at the hands of government forces, Tamil Tigers, the Karuna faction and other armed groups,” said Purna Sen, Asia Pacific Director at Amnesty International. “Let us be clear — no side in this conflict has anything to be complacent about. On the contrary, all parties are breaching international law by failing to protect civilians.”
Increasing abductions, illegal killings and child recruitment in Sri Lanka are all going on unchecked and victims do not receive justice. The intensified fighting over the last year has forced over 300,000 people to flee their homes. At least 1000 people have been forcibly disappeared since the beginning of 2006.
“The situation in Sri Lanka has become so desperate for local people that urgent action is needed. Civilians desperately need better protection and a key goal of our campaign is to press for independent human rights monitors to investigate human rights abuses and identify the perpetrators, so they can be brought to justice,” said Purna Sen.
“Through our campaign we are drawing attention to the increasing human rights abuses committed against civilians by the Sri Lankan government, the Tamil Tigers, the Karuna faction and other armed groups. The lives of hundreds of thousands of Sri Lankans are being affected — our campaign is about these people, not the Sri Lankan cricket team.”
“The Sri Lankan government is failing in its responsibility to protect civilians; there have been over 4000 deaths since early 2006 while this government has been in power. Reported accusations that Amnesty International has ‘tarnished the country’s image’ do not bear scrutiny — the authorities need to look closer to home,” continued Purna Sen.
“The Tamil Tigers have killed hundreds of civilians in summary executions and indiscriminate bomb attacks. They are continuing to forcibly recruit child soldiers and have even prevented civilians from fleeing the fighting in the North and East.”
“It is a small step for all parties to the conflict to agree to allow access to independent human rights monitors but it would make a huge difference to the lives of ordinary Sri Lankans.”
“Cricket is a great game and the Sri Lankan people are rightly proud of their ethnically diverse national cricket team, which symbolises the best of Sri Lanka,” said Purna Sen. “But hundreds of thousands of people have had to flee the fighting to live in temporary shelter — and so are not able to live in safety let alone watch cricket.”
Amnesty International emphasised that it was not calling for a boycott of the Sri Lankan cricket team or Sri Lankan sports overall and is not campaigning in any stadiums in the West Indies.

@ Mr. Poojitha,
Please check your sources and be informed before making this sort of comments. The basic outline of the Amnesty's campaign was as follows:
The Sri Lankan government, LTTE and other armed groups commit to allowing independent human rights monitors into their country to make sure they “play by the rules”. These monitors will:
• document and investigate the increasing number of abuses being committed by the Sri Lanka security forces, LTTE and other armed groups
• publicize their findings
• identify the perpetrators so that they can be brought to justice.
Their presence will have a direct impact on the lives of ordinary Sri Lankans as all parties to the conflict will be less likely to commit human rights violations while the world is watching.
Protect civilians in Sri Lanka now
Amnesty International will deliver signed cricket balls to the government and the LTTE, urging them to invite independent human rights monitors into the country immediately. Every signature counts!
You can read all the details here :
http://web.amnesty.org/pages/lka-020407-petition-eng
What i meant to say is that the wording on that ball gives another meaning,It doesn't say anything about sending it to LTTE and government, when you distribute the ball you don't send the above document with it,Do you?Don't forget our conflict is 25 years old,you should be proud of our Army for at least keeping it at this level.
Its sad to see some one is using sports to gain publicity, specially world cup, good that ICC banned this campaign. If this ball thing is a good one they wouldn't have banned it,Right? So something is wrong there......
If they only want signatures on the balls why would they go to world cup? They could have gotten the signatures by sending it directly to country's like UK ,Aus (By other means)......
@ Dear Mr.Poojitha
Excuse me? Our army? Why would I be proud of these killings and war wedged by "your" army.? That's not my army. Let me get that straight. I am not proud of this war. Yes, it is 25 years old and shameful. It needs to be stopped. It is disgusting!
If you simply read and followed the HR campaign you would understand that it was targeting all the parties involved. Including SL government, LTTE, Karuna group and other military groups. I have quoted the campaign page once again in the above comment. And Saman has posted the recent press release. Just be patient and gather information before coming to conclusions. You are just parroting arguments borrowed from the SL government and it's allies who wanted nothing but to block this campaign.
Well, at least you should have the brains to check the Amnesty's website for their campaigns related to other countries. They haven't mentioned about other countries here. Any child would understand that. And I won't take up the job of summarizing Anmesty's work for you. Just go and do a google search. Furthermore, - as I have written in Sinhala - using cricket world cup to bring attention to the human rights campaign is a very creative idea. I like that I and I support it wholeheartedly. They've chosen the world cup because it is one of the best possible place to get maximum possible attention. It is being watched by a large percentage of Sri Lankan population. I can't imagine a better place than this.
And I still have to make my comments on your previous comment :-)
You assume that we all agree with your presupposition that USA's war is justified and legitimate? And it provides the ideal standard for Human Right conduct? And UAS is goddess of democracy and HR? That's bullshit! I see the absolute opposite. My stand is: USA's war on Iraq is an international war crime. Not only Amnesty, but also millions of ordinary people have raised their voices against it. That war is a violation of all sorts of laws, including humanitarian and international law. So it is out of the question. If you suggest me to look at the way USA conduct it;s war in Iraq to find the ideal for Sri Lanka I am totally against it. I protest for unconditional withdrawal of troops, not only from Iraq, but also from the North and East in Sri Lanka. And you think USA's war is against Al Quaeda. Even George W. Bush doesn't repeat that lie anymore. He has invented new reasons for the invasion because claimed terrorist connections to Iraq proved absolutely invalid. You seem to be dangerously lacking access to any factual news coverage, Mr. Poojitha! I am stunned to see that you give Guantanamo bay and such places as guidelines. What you suggest is absolutely disgusting.
And I don't agree with your recommendation of violating human rights in order to suppress "terrorism". As I have written here(are you able to read Sinhala? Please refer to the help page if you find difficulties. This site uses Unicode) this campaign is not against Cricket. I assume that you are not well informed about this Amnesty's campaign. Why on earth would Amnesty make a conspiracy against Sri Lankan cricketers? What exactly is the gain? Are you aware of what is going on in Colombo these days? Or are you just getting a kick by leaving comments on various blogs?
I do not support this war. I am totally against it. It's a crime against humanity. I do not support the LTTE either. Yes, LTTE employs terrorism. But that does not justify the crimes that are being carried out by the SL government against innocent civilians in the broad daylight in Colombo and various other places. Please check the human rights records of the government, reported by various parties including Anmesty International and Human Rights Watch before appearing on behalf of the government of Sri Lanka
For a more sensible and well informed critique from a third party please see this article by Dr.P.Saravanamuttu:
http://www.groundviews.org/2007/04/10/the-amnesty-campaign-taking-the-eye-off-the-ball/
By the way, Mr. Poojitha you say "LTTE is responsible for 90% of the human rights violation" When did you do the survey? If the HR organizations are allowed to step in and do their job you would get a more accurate and truthful picture.
So when our army withdraw from north & east (giving it to LTTE) everything will be ok.......dont be stupid,be realistic.....LTTE 1000 times worse than army ,they recruit kids to fight and use them as suicide bombers.........
I never say USA is right, what i say is sometimes these things happens when there is a war,to you war may seem to be like playing chess,no its not,you don't have enough time to make a decision, its a fluid situation,a soldier may have 2 or 3 seconds to deside whether he's shooting at a civilian or LTTE ,otherwise he gets killed.
If both parties lay down arms no problem, but its stupid and utterly unrealistic to force the army to withdraw, you are making things worse.
I checked amnesty website, apologize,i think they are trying to do something but it doesn't mean they are 100% correct,
ananda and saman....ppl with brains, at last.
cheers
Thanks very much galle blogger :-)
On your blog I just found two well written entries on the issue with some useful links. It's pretty encouraging to see the discussion(debate? fight?) over there : It's amazing how people go blind and miss the obviously visible facts when the situation is politically charged.
